People Who Beat Cancer on Their Own
This article reviews nine former cancer patients who overcame their illness on their own. They ranged from 35 to 77 years old, and had been in remission from 5 to 23 years. They had these things in common:
* They "opposed medical advice or questioned why certain medical advice or activities were necessary.'
* They "practiced some form of alternative health care," although no one method was shared by all.
* They "let go of repressed feelings and issues, and also some personal and family concerns."
* They all expressed "abiding faith. . . that the good and bad were a part oflife and, [that] no matter what
happened, things would turn out all right."
Through such activities, "they also illustrated that a disease process could be . . . meaningful."
