INDEPENDENT WORLDWIDE STUDIES CONFIRM CHIROPRACTIC IS EFFECTIVE & SAVES MONEY
Numerous studies have been conducted throughout the world on the efficacy and cost effectiveness of chiropractic care. The most CUlTent research studies were conducted by non-chiropractic professionals to provide more objectivity. In conlrast. commonly prescribed medical procedures for treating back aliments are.J the topic of large scale scientific studies to test their efficacy and cost effectiveness.
STAN/MEDSTAT RESEARCH
Miron Siano. PhD, Professor, of Ecpnomlcs and Management, Oakland University In his study, "A Comparison of Health Care Costs of Chiropractic Versus Medical Patients," reflects Information gained from MEDSTAT. the largest known source of private sector Information on chiropractic claims payments. the data base contains data on over 2 million beneficiaries in the fee for service sector on over 395. 641 patients. Included In that data base were claims for 10,083 New York State patients. Some of Dr. Stano's New York findings are:
* "Chiropractic (DC) payments are relatively small considering the types of conditions treated. In the New York State study, overall chiropractic payments per DC user were $283 versus overall non-chiropractic (MD, DO) payments per MD/DO user of $1,810."
* "Payment comparisons are consistent with the view that chiropractic substitutes Cor other Corms of care. Overall, in the New York State study the group receiving medical treatment only had mean (average) total insurance payments 39.5% higher than the group receiving both chiropractic and medical care. Total health care payments for MDs and DOs averaged $4,442 per patient over a two year period versus $3,184-a $1,258 difference. "
THE MANGA REPORT
The Manga Report, commissioned by the Ministry of Health in Ontario and calTled out by leading Independent health economists at the University of Ottawa. led by Pran Manga. Ph.D., reviewed all of the International evidence on the management of low back pain. It concluded:
* There would ,be highly significant cost savings if more management of low-back pain was transferred from
physicians to chiropractors:
* There should be a "shift in policy to encourage and prefer chiropractic services for most patients with lowback pain," and chiropractic should be "Cully insured (and) fully integrated" into the Ontario health care system.
* "The overwhelming body of evidence" shows that chiropractic management of low-back pain is more cost effective than medical management, and that "many medical therapies are oC questionable validity or are clearly inadequate..."
* "Chiropractic manipulation is safer than medical management of low-back pain."
* "Chiropractic management is greatly superior to medical management in terms of scientific validity, safety, cost effectiveness and patient j tisfaction,"
THE RAND STUDY
This project alms to provide a comprehensive set of Indications for performing spinal manipulation for persons with low back pain. The project, which will take several million dollars and several years to complete, Is being conducted by the RAND Corporation. a non-profit private corporation In Santa Monica. California. which conducts research and development for the U.S. government and the private sector and commands International respect.
The project Is being directed by two medical doctors, Robert Brook. M.D., and Paul Shekelle, M.D.. and Involves two expert panels of clinicians and researchers to assess the clinical consensus on the appropriateness of spinal manipulation for more than 1,600 patients with back pain conditions. Initial results of the study are:
* Acute and sub-acute mechanical back pain patients given spinal manipulation achieve better early results than patients given common medical treat, ments (bedrest, medication, traction, corsets).
* 50% of the patients treated by manipulation were free of pain after one week, compared to 27% treated with bedrest.
* Manipulation provides earlier relief than other treatments or no treatment.
* Patients with pain of 2 to 3 weeks duration achieved a 50% reduction in pain more rapidly with manipulation
than with mobilization.
* Manipulation proved better for pain relief than the use of physiotherapy and analgesics. Pain was relieved by manipulation in a shorter time (3.5 treatments) than by exercise (5.8 treatments).
* Patients treated by manipulation improved significantly faster than those treated with medicine.
.BRITISH MEDICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL STUDY
The British Medical Research Council conduded a 10 year. multi-center trial comparing chiropractic and hospital outpatient management of 741 patients with acute and chronic mechanical low back pain. Results of the study were reported in the June 2, 1990, issue of The British Medical Journal, and Include:
* Chiropractic treatment was significantly more effective, particularly for patients with chronic and severe pain,
* Results were long-term-"the benefit of chiropractic treatment became more evident throughout the follow-up
period" of two years.
* The superior results for chiropractic patients were not result of trial errors or placebo.
wThe potential economic, resource, and policy implications of our results are extensive. Consideration should be given...to providing chiropractic within the National Health Service, either in hospitals, or by purchasing chiropractic treatment from existing clinics."
An economic analysis, which appears conservative and uses patient numbers reported in 1979, shows savings in excess of 10 million pounds per annum in Britain by having hospital outpatients with back pain treated by chiropractors.
* The study provides very considerable support of the New Zealand Commission's findings.
THE NEW ZEALAND REPORT
This Is one of the most thorough and positive studies of chiropractic care on record. The 20-month project began In January 1978 and concluded in October 1979 and was conducted by a government commission. Among the findings contained In the 377 page report were:
* Spinal adjusting is a vital, impressively safe and clinically effective form of health care.
* Chiropractors have beyond a reasonable doubt a more thorough training in spinal mechanics and spinal
therapy than any other health professional
* Chiropractic must be an integral part. of all hospital care.
* Chiropractic is scientifically based. .
* The report concluded, "modern chiropractic Is a soundly based and valuable branch of health care In a specialized area neglected by the medical profession. Chiropractic has filled this void with the finest, safest, and most effective health care In the world."
NEVADA WORKERS' COMPENSATION STUDY
Compiled by the State Industrial Insurance Systems (SIISI, this study compared the average cost of medical and chiropractic care for patients who suffered Industrial Injuries from 1988-1990. The audit, released In August 1991 and verified by SIIS Chief of Planning and Analysis. shows that for each of the three years examined, the average cost for patients treated by chiropractors was significantly less than for those receiving care from medical doctors. Results of the audit showed:
* Although ol11y 24.4% of all industrial injuries are back injuries, they account for more than 50% of total medical costs.
* For the three year period ending in 1990, the average medical cost per patient ($2,142) was 260% higher than the average chiropractic case ($892).
* Compensation for loss of work time from an industrial injury accounts for 39.2% of the cost of claim manage ment. Several state studies show that loss of time under chiropractic care is less than one-third oC that for medical care.
* The average number of visits to a chiropractor Cor an industrial injury over the three year period was less than 10 visits per case.
* Injured workers are often able to continue working while receiving chiropractic treatments. This may not be the case with standard medical treatment protocol of bed rest and medication.
* Chiropractic eliminated the concern of UlUlecessary surgery, inappropriate hospitalization, improper use of
medication and the high frequency of narcotic analgesics,
Our purpose is to educate and adjust families toward optimal health
