Fluoride Fails against Rampant Tooth Decay
When babies get "rampant" tooth decay, it's usually because they've been put to bed with a baby bottle. This studyJound such d cay in nearly a quarter of Head Start children surveyed in five southwestern states. Rural children suffered it more often than urban children, and native Americans more often than whites, blacks, or hispanics.
Why these cultural and geographical differences? Because of. differences in fluoridation, they at first suspected. Yet when they tested that suspicion by comparing decay rates in fluoridated and nonfluoridated areas, they found none. Decay rates in fluoridated and nonfluoridated areas were the same, which suggests that fluoride may not protect teeth as much as its proponents claim it does. - G. P. Bames et aI., "Ethnicity, location, age, and fluoridation factors in baby bottle tooth decay and caries prevalence of Head Start children," Public Health Reports 107(1992): 167-73.
